What happens when you don’t commit repeatedly?
Have you ever wondered, what happens when you don’t commit repeatedly? Constantly making progress is not really a realistic image of what human lives look like. There are ups and downs and sooner or later we stop committing to what really matters to us.
So, what happens then? Does one of those cute Internet kitties die when you procrastinate on your commitments?
No, of course it doesn’t… and fear not that no animals were harmed while this was being written. Cats don’t die because of this but if you continuously avoid committing to what’s meaningful to you, you will eventually:
Undermine your self-esteem
- Break your own trust
- Slow down your personal development
- Invest your energy in toxic thoughts (like the ones we revisited in the first meditation)
- Promote emotions that drain you such as shame, guilt, frustration or hopelessness.
Your human experience
All of these are absolutely common… these emotions are part of our human experience, no doubt about it! And equally human is the tendency to push these away, to ignore them and bury them under the rug.
So, what happens when we ignore these emotions? Based on the discomfort and hope that they will go away, they actually gain more power. They become invisible but they still reside within. As a consequence, you will be probably reacting upon these emotions in a hurting, defensive and insecure way.
An alternative way
Luckily, mindfulness offers an alternative way. A path in which we can observe these emotions without getting carried away by them.
All you have to do is to become aware of these emotions. That’s it. You don’t need to change them or get rid of them. Not an easy task when you feel them, I know!
But you’re not alone and since I know how complex this practice can be, I’ve created another guided meditation (ideal for beguinners) to support you and your commitments. In this practice we focus on the emotional side of breaking your commitments. Listen to it below:
If you try this, let me know how it goes in the comments below. I’d love to hear how midnfulness shapes your experience with your commitments.
Virtual hugs,
